Efficient Estimation of Stochastic Volatility Using Noisy Observations: A Multi-Scale Approach

چکیده

With the availability of high frequency financial data, nonparametric estimation of volatility of an asset return process becomes feasible. A major problem is how to estimate the volatility consistently and efficiently, when the observed asset returns contain error or noise, for example, in the form of microstructure noise. The former (consistency) has been addressed heavily in the recent literature, however, the resulting estimator is not quite efficient. In Zhang, Mykland, and Aı̈t-Sahalia (2003), the best estimator converges to the true volatility only at the rate of n. In this paper, we propose an efficient estimator which converges to the true at the rate of n, which is the best attainable. The estimator remains valid when the observation noise is dependent. Some key words and phrases: consistency, dependent noise, discrete observation, efficiency, Ito process, microstructure noise, observation error, rate of convergence, realized volatility Lan Zhang is Assistant Professor, Department of Statistics, Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA 15213. Realized Volatility in Noisy Prices: a MSRV approach

Volatility is the primary measure of risk in modern finance and volatility estimation and inference has attracted substantial attention in the recent financial econometric literature, especially in high-frequency analyses. High-frequency prices carry a significant amount of noise. Therefore, there are two volatility components embedded in the returns constructed using high frequency prices: the...

Confidence Interval Estimation of the Mean of Stationary Stochastic Processes: a Comparison of Batch Means and Weighted Batch Means Approach (TECHNICAL NOTE)

Suppose that we have one run of n observations of a stochastic process by means of computer simulation and would like to construct a condifence interval for the steady-state mean of the process. Seeking for independent observations, so that the classical statistical methods could be applied, we can divide the n observations into k batches of length m (n= k.m) or alternatively, transform the cor...

Modeling Stock Return Volatility Using Symmetric and Asymmetric Nonlinear State Space Models: Case of Tehran Stock Market

Volatility is a measure of uncertainty that plays a central role in financial theory, risk management, and pricing authority. Turbulence is the conditional variance of changes in asset prices that is not directly observable and is considered a hidden variable that is indirectly calculated using some approximations. To do this, two general approaches are presented in the literature of financial ...

Estimating the Efficient Shocks' Share in Iran's Economic Growth Fluctuations (Dynamic Stochastic General Equilibrium Approach)

In economic, the degree of intervention of policymakers in creation of economic stability and the response to economic fluctuations is one of the most important problems. The higher the share of efficient shocks in economic fluctuation, the lower the degree of policy response. This study evaluates the contribution of efficient shocks in creating of economic fluctuations and also estimates poten...

Efficient Bayesian estimation of a multivariate stochastic volatility model with cross leverage and heavy-tailed errors

An efficient Bayesian estimation using a Markov chain Monte Carlo method is proposed in the case of a multivariate stochastic volatility model as a natural extension of the univariate stochastic volatility model with leverage and heavy-tailed errors. Note that we further incorporate cross-leverage effects among stock returns. Our method is based on a multi-move sampler that samples a block of l...
